ISSUES AND CHALLENGES RELATING TO GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT IN THE CONTEXT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Groundwater has become the most important source of freshwater in India (meeting around 60 percent of irrigation needs and more than 80 percent of drinking water needs). This dramatic increase in use has affected the groundwater resources in the country both in terms of quality and quantity. Equitable and sustainable use and management of groundwater is directly linked to the realization of the fundamental right to water as well as crucial to the livelihood of farmers and to ensure food security. More recently, the likely adverse impacts of climate change on availability and quality of water have also invited significant attention at the international level, as well as in India.

This seminar aims to provide a platform for academics, researchers, lawyers and grassroots activists to discuss and debate legal, policy and institutional issues and challenges related to groundwater management in India in the context of climate change/the environment.
